Film school dudes and nihilism
Jennifer: JUST FINISHED THE BALE-ATHON!
Tuck: Was it Bale-errific? Was it everything you imagined it to be? I still have The Machinist on my Netflix. I need to fast track that.
Jennifer: It was everything and FAR LESS than I imagined it would be, though there were some real surprises in there. Amazingly, my teenage crush still survives, even after some of those stinkers. I would not fast track The Machinist if I were you. Uhhhhh
Tuck: Aww.. bummer. That one looked kinda cool. Even though skinny guys make me mad. Jerks. Was it just a crappy movie or was it because he looked like beef jerky?? I think I will Netflix Empire of the Sun. Start at the beginning.
Jennifer: EOTS is totally the way to go. Long, but really good. I didn't like The Machinist because it's in a genre of films that I don't really enjoy -- dark nihilist views of the world from dudes who probably went to film school and have been taught that that shit is deep, man.
Tuck: BWAHAHAHAHA!! Stupid film school jerkoffs!! That's pretty funny right there actually. I can totally see that. That's why I am glad that we did Production exclusively. Leave the film analysis to people with too much time on their hands. I'm too busy filming stuff. Hahaha.. That is all kinds of win!
Jennifer: I mean, I'm not saying that all of the nihilist shit is bad, or that film school is bad. And in many ways, I think these dudes (and many of us in American society) have been duped to believe that if you're not talking about the Bad News all the time, then you're just naive and shallow and a bad artists. Meanwhile, I think it takes even more courage to talk and make films about the Good News (and I don't mean the Bible) in our world.
Tuck: No no.. I agree completely! I was just arguing about that with a bitter friend of mine. It takes 10 times more balls to be positive in the face of overwhelming all encompassing negativity. Right now Anger and Hate are cool. Negativity is "In". It's everywhere. Keeping your chin up in this climate is far more rock and roll. What's even funnier about the film school thing is that at our final reviews last semester, a LARGE number of the 1st year films were not only violent and negative but misogynist!! It was kind of shocking that young film makers couldn't come up with anything better than strangling and stabbing girls to make "art". I mean really dudes? So yeah.. I get what you mean.
That's why my I'm gonna rock a comedy for my next one. I'm gonna rock that shit hard!
Jennifer: ROCK AND FUCKING ROLL, MY FRIEND! I wanna help on that comedy for sure. Let us all make art that is realistic and beautiful and divine! And funny! and SNACKELBAGS!!!
